OUR HISTORY

A GALLERY of OUR HISTORIC HERITAGE

History abounds in Claverack and on Rte. 23B can be seen a handsome white structure that served as Columbia County's fIrst Court House, which opened in 1787 and where Martin Van Buren, a youthful attorney, practiced before arising the political ladder to become the eighth President of the United States.

First Court House

During the 1840's, Claverack was wracked by the anti-rent troubles and tin horns sounded the approach of Sheriff's deputies to collect the hated tithes enforced by the land owners.
